How to Exfoliate Your Hands (and Why You Should)
November 2, 2026 · 3 min read · Palma de Salus

Most of us would not dream of skipping exfoliation on our face, yet our hands, which work harder and see more weather than almost any other skin, rarely get the same attention. A little gentle exfoliation is one of the easiest ways to make hands look and feel noticeably smoother.
Why exfoliate your hands?
Smoother texture. Hands build up rough, dull skin, especially on the knuckles and backs of the hands. Exfoliating lifts it away.
Better hydration. When that dull layer is gone, hydrating products can absorb properly instead of sitting on top.
A brighter look. Freshly exfoliated skin reflects light more evenly, so hands look healthier.
Physical or chemical exfoliation?
Chemical exfoliants use acids to loosen dead skin. Physical exfoliants use fine particles to buff it away. For hands, a gentle physical exfoliant built into a wash is the simplest option: there is no extra step, and you control the pressure. The key is a fine, natural particle. Avoid plastic microbeads and large, jagged shell fragments that can scratch.

How to exfoliate your hands: an easy routine
- Wet your hands with lukewarm water.
- Apply a small amount of exfoliating wash.
- Massage in gentle circles for 20 to 30 seconds, focusing on the knuckles, the backs of the hands and around the nails.
- Rinse well and pat dry.
- Follow with something hydrating, such as the Hydrating Hand Sanitizing Serum.
How often should you exfoliate your hands?
With a gentle, wash-based exfoliant, everyday use is fine for most people. With a stronger scrub, two to three times a week is plenty. If your skin feels sore or looks red, ease off.
Our choice: upcycled olive seed powder
The Palma de Salus Exfoliating Hand & Body Wash exfoliates with upcycled olive seed powder, a byproduct of olive oil production that would otherwise go to waste.
